The American Lawyer recognized litigation partner Kannon Shanmugam as a “Litigator of the Week” on June 27, highlighting Paul, Weiss’s win, alongside co-counsel, in a groundbreaking AI fair use case on behalf of Meta Platforms, Inc.
Paul, Weiss secured partial summary judgment on June 25 in the lawsuit, in which a group of 13 prominent authors claimed that Meta’s use of their work to train its Llama AI models violated copyright law. Calling Meta’s use of the work “highly transformative,” U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria found that the authors hadn’t shown harm to the market for their works—an “early and important fair use win” for Meta, the publication notes.
In a Q&A, Kannon notes that the win was a true team effort. “Lawyers from all three firms—Cleary, Cooley and Paul, Weiss—worked interchangeably on every aspect of the case,” he says.
In addition to Kannon, the Paul, Weiss team representing Meta included partners Melinda Haag, Will Marks and Anna Gressel; counsel Marc Price Wolf and associates Jamie Durling, Matteo Godi, Abigail Frisch Vice, Anna Lucardi, Anna Stapleton, Matthew Disler, Muamera Hadzic, Ben Miller-Gootnick, Jackson Willis and Emma White.
