Litigation partner Jeh Johnson wrote an op-ed, “Remembering 9/11 Like It Was Yesterday,” published in Bloomberg Law. In the op-ed, Secretary Johnson offers a personal reflection of his memories of September 11, 2001, as he watched the Twin Towers collapse from the Paul, Weiss New York offices. He also reflects on his rededication to public service as President Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security following the tragedy.

Secretary Johnson discusses how, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, foreign-based terrorism is no longer the principal threat to our homeland—instead, terrorist acts carried out by domestic-based extremists now outpace those committed by foreign terrorists. Additionally, Americans’ attitudes toward COVID-19 have broken down along partisan lines, resulting in a new surge in deaths almost entirely among the unvaccinated.

He encourages our government and the American people to stay one step ahead of the evolving divisions within our country. “On this 20th anniversary, my wish for our nation is that the American people rededicate themselves to our national interests. Our survival as a great nation depends on this,” Secretary Johnson says.
