Litigation partner Kannon Shanmugam was profiled in a National Law Journal article, “After His 100th Oral Argument, Kannon Shanmugam Reflects on Appellate Practice.” In the article, Kannon discusses what it feels like to reach this milestone, how he prepares and strategizes for oral arguments, and his pre-argument rituals. He also reflects on his first-ever appellate argument in 2004 and his argument before the Supreme Court in 2020’s Seila Law v. CFPB, which was one of the last in-person Supreme Court arguments before the pandemic.
“While it’s always a privilege to argue in the [Supreme] Court and I will never take that for granted, I just enjoy being in court—whatever the court,” Kannon said. “I think of myself first and foremost as a litigator, not as a Supreme Court litigator.”
