Litigation partner Karen Dunn participated in a July 22 virtual panel discussion, “White Supremacy on Trial,” co-hosted by the University of Virginia's Miller Center and Karsh Center for Law and Democracy.
The panelists discussed Sines v. Kessler, the first private lawsuit to attempt to hold key white supremacist leaders of the August 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville accountable for their racially motivated violent conspiracy under the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 and other federal and state laws. Panelists spoke about the process for holding extremists responsible and the lawsuit’s potential to be a deterrent to future acts of white supremacist violence. Filed in October 2017 on behalf of a coalition of Charlottesville community members injured in the violence, the case is headed for a multi-week jury trial in late October of this year.
Karen was joined by co-counsel Roberta Kaplan of Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP and Amy Spitalnick, executive director of Integrity First For America, as well as Risa Goluboff, dean of the UVA School of Law; Ian Solomon, dean of UVA’s Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy; and Micah Schwartzman, director of the Karsh Center.
