Loretta A. Ippolito is a partner and Co-Chair of the Personal Representation Department in New York. Loretta’s practice involves all aspects of estate planning and estate and trust administration, with extensive experience providing sophisticated estate, gift and income tax advice for high-net-worth individuals and families.
Loretta has been recognized by Chambers USA and Chambers High Net Worth for her work in Wealth Management Law and Private Wealth Law, respectively, since 2012. According to those publications, she is known for her “ability to formulate sophisticated strategies and follow through on execution,” possesses a “distinctive understanding of investments and financial mathematics,” and has been praised for her “innate ability to connect with people and families.”
In 2023, Loretta was named to Business Today News’ Top 10 Most Influential Private Wealth Lawyers in New York for her work advising high-net-worth clients. Loretta was also named to the Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) 2023 Pro Bono Dean’s List, recognizing lawyers who have made a significant impact providing pro bono legal assistance to under-resourced New Yorkers. Loretta has been recognized by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in Trusts and Estates and has been recognized by Super Lawyers for more than a decade. In 2012, she received the Chambers USA “Women in Law – Up & Coming Wealth Management Lawyer of the Year” award.
Loretta advises clients on a broad range of complex estate planning issues, including the effective use of gift-giving programs, domestic trust planning, the tax-efficient transfer of closely held family business interests, liquidity issues, tax and succession planning and foreign trust planning for non-U.S. persons with U.S. contacts. Loretta also assists clients with charitable giving, including the disposition of appreciated property, the use of private foundations and charitable split-interest trusts.
Loretta is a Fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). She is also a member of the Trusts and Estates Law Section and the International Estate Planning Committee of the New York State Bar Association as well as the U.K.-based Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), and a former member of the Committee on Trusts & Estates of the New York Women’s Bar Association, which she co-chaired for over a dozen years, and of the Trusts, Estates and Surrogate’s Court Committee and the Committee on Estate and Gift Taxation of the NYC Bar Association.
Loretta is a member of the Professional Advisors Council of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and a former Director of the New York Women’s Bar Association, the Harvard Law School Association of New York City and the Lawyer’s Alliance for New York. She formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Bernard and Irene Schwartz Foundation.
Loretta frequently lectures on trusts and estates topics and has presented at the NYU Summer Tax Conference for the past eight years. Loretta has authored numerous articles for legal publications, including “Celebrity Estate Planning: Misfires of the Rich and Famous III,” published in the September 2020 edition of Probate & Property; “Expert Q&A on Decanting a Trust,” published in December 2018 in Thomson Reuters Practical Law; “The New Price of Expatriation,” published in the December 2004 edition of Trusts & Estates and “What Price Expatriation?” published in the July 2003 edition of Trusts & Estates.
