Artificial Intelligence Group Chair Katherine Forrest’s latest Technology Today column, “SHIELD: Guidelines for Navigating the AI Regulatory Landscape,” appeared in the August 18 issue of the New York Law Journal. In the article, Katherine proposes a set of basic guidelines for companies navigating the rapidly evolving AI regulatory landscape, neatly packaging her suggestions within a mnemonic acronym, SHIELD.
The letters in SHIELD propose that businesses “scope” their AI systems and tools; “highlight” use cases and risk levels; “identify” applicable state, federal and international laws; “establish” oversight and accountability roles; “log” decisions, training data sources and disclosures; and “detect” and respond to updates in the legal landscape.
