Deputy Corporate Chair and Investment Funds Global Co-Chair Marco Masotti spoke with Law360 about the booming sports deals market as the sector experiences new private investment driven by rising team valuations, increasing ticket sales and sponsorships, and growing interest in alternative media. In “Paul, Weiss PE Partner On The Evolution Of Sports Investing,” published on October 31, Marco discusses the increasing role of private equity investors in sports ventures, including in women’s sports; the formalization of Paul, Weiss’s sports practice, including the firm’s significant current and past sports-related representations spanning litigation, investigations and transactional matters; and what’s behind the rise in sports-related deal activity by private equity investors. He says he expects still more interest and activity in the years to come.
“From what I see on the fundraising side, there's growing interest and liquidity, and that capital needs to find a home,” Marco says. “Over the next few years, you'll see a significant amount of majority and minority investments in leagues, sports assets and businesses around sports.”
