Cybersecurity & Data Protection Co-Chair John Carlin spoke with Axios about the insider threats that face fast-growing or venture-backed AI companies. In an article published on March 19, “Insider Threats Are AI Developers’ Next Hurdle,” John notes that while larger AI developers like Google and Microsoft have invested in counter-espionage programs for years, the new crop of AI startups are in a more vulnerable position, as they often face investor pressure to launch their products quickly. Smaller AI companies “just haven't thought about [insider threats] at all,” he says.

John recommends some cost-effective ways for AI developers to mitigate insider threats and espionage, including taking inventory of proprietary data in their systems and reaching out to regional FBI offices for information on possible insider threats to their specific company.
