John Carlin Discusses Cyberattack Prevention With Harvard Law Bulletin

Cybersecurity & Data Protection Practice Group Chair John Carlin spoke with Harvard Law Bulletin about how the government and the private sector can minimize the effects of cyberattacks. In “Security Breach,” published in the Bulletin’s Spring Edition, John notes a variety of steps to protect people and information amid more frequent, more complex cyberattacks.

“What we need to do in the cyber context — and it’s evolving and improving over time — is increase the costs [for the attackers] so that we can ultimately reduce the number of people being hit by these attacks,” John says.  Other strategies include incentivizing cooperation between the government and the private sector.  “It doesn’t need to be all stick,” he says, noting that he is optimistic that society can “innovate our way out” of cybersecurity risks, including by designing new technologies in a way that offers protection on the front end and avoids having to play catch up on the back end.
