Second Circuit Review: Measuring the Speedy Trial Clock

Practices & Industries

Litigation partner Martin Flumenbaum and firm chairman Brad Karp’s latest Second Circuit Review column, “Measuring the Speedy Trial Clock,” appeared in the April 24 issue of the New York Law Journal. The authors discuss a recent decision in which the court ruled for the third time in two years that a district judge in the Western District of New York violated a criminal defendant’s Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial, and reiterated that both courts and the government owe an “affirmative obligation” to criminal defendants and the public to bring matters to trial promptly. Law clerk Akila Sarathy assisted in the preparation of this article.
