Of counsel Mordecai Rochlin, who just celebrated his 106th birthday, was profiled in a New York Law Journal article that looks back on his 80-plus extraordinary years of association with Paul, Weiss.
“Mordie is a treasure. He is a repository of the firm’s great history, having worked at the firm for more than 80 years,” said Brad Karp, who was only a summer associate when Mordecai retired in 1983.
Mordecai struggled to get a job after graduating during the Great Depression, the article notes, because Jewish lawyers in those days weren’t even sent to interviews at the white-shoe firms. He worked for a short time at government jobs, completed a one-year clerkship and then landed a job at Cohen, Cole, Weiss & Wharton, the predecessor to Paul, Weiss.
“I didn’t realize when I walked in the door in 1938 that I would spend the rest of my life,” said Mordecai, whom the article notes is among the oldest living attorneys in New York State. “Paul, Weiss was my life. The way I looked on the firm, it was not only a community of scholars but a community of friends.”
