Corporate partner Matt Merkle spoke with The Lawyer as part of his recognition as one of its “Hot 100” lawyers. Matt highlighted his early experiences as a newly minted associate in New York, and how he ended up following opportunities to London.
“At some point, everyone must narrow future options,” he says. “Be conscious of that, and be thoughtful when considering how and when you make a decision, like specializing in a practice area, that might seem to close some doors, so you make that decision instead of the decision getting made for you. But once you have made your decision, stick with it. Sometimes specializing opens up more doors than it closes.”
